Safe Haven Walking Horses
Safe Haven Walking Horses was the beginning of Kathi's work in rescuing troubled equine souls. Starting in the '90's Kathi began to rescue the troubled horses others cast aside. "Unrideable, temperamental, shy, should be put down..." - terms applied to horses that now had a new place to call home. After finding love and peace in the hands of a single woman dedicated to bringing them 'back' - most then moved on to normal, happy lives with a family carefully chosen by Kathi. Some, hurt too badly in some way, would find peace living out their days in the pastures of her Iron Range farm - safe from harm. Loss of fulltime employment meant loss of that original farm but not loss of the herd. Determined to keep her herd together, Kathi worked days fulltime, while doing training fulltime nights for other farms in exchange for the boarding of herd. In 2005 Kathi moved her herd to a new farm, a farm that would later that Summer be named Raindance.

The woman
Kathi (Davis) Tucker has spent a lifetime working with animals. As a young girl she bred and showed collies, leading to a love of small animals that continues to this day with her 'entourage' of dog and cats. As a young lady she began horseback riding, quickly falling in love with the animals that would change and become her life's work. From her teen years of dressage and jumping horses in competition, she moved into her 20's breeding and training Arabians. In her 30's she met and fell in love with the breed she now specializes in - Tennessee Walking Horses. Today she breeds, trains and sells Walkers and her horses have found new happy homes all over the United States as well as Canada. If I listed all of the awards and trophies she has accumulated throughout her equine career she would most likely be embarrassed and mad. Rarely does she talk about her own accomplishments and only if asked. She prefers to re-direct conversation to the subject near and dear to her heart - horses. So rather than try and list out Kathi's accomplishments and awards...I decided a picture is worth far more. So I snuck in some pictures of her in competition and receiving various trophies and awards.

The Future - The WindChill Legacy, Ltd.
Some parts of the future are easy to see - this is one of them. Kathi's devotion to a little 9 month old colt she would call WindChill during his brief period of time on earth will continue with the organization created in his memory. She will continue the fight against equine neglect and abuse by running the Legacy and applying her years of experience in equine care and rescue towards the betterment of others.  WindChill wasn't her first rescue, and sadly, probably will not be her last. Her ideas for battling this type of injustice will guide us towards a day we hope is not far away in which people learn to love, care for, and respect the animals we exist on this planet with.
